USAID defines food security as having physical and economic access to sufficient food to meet dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. The Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture released statistics on the types of households where food insecurity was prevalent in 2020. In these homes, the food insecurity rate was higher than the national average rate of 10.5 percent.

The USDA’s statistics show that 27.7 percent and 16.3 percent of households headed by single women and single men, respectively, faced food insecurity in 2020. Also, 15.3 percent of families with children under the age of six faced food insecurity. The USDA’s statistics also show that 21.7 percent of households with black, non-Hispanic reference persons experienced food insecurity. Generally, families with children had a higher food insecurity rate than those without children, 14.8 to 8.8 percent. Overall, 38.3 million American residents will live in food-insecure homes in 2020.
